Arnside is a small but busy village on the shores of the Kent estuary, with a main street right on the estuary, which then opens out to the ‘big skies’ of Morecambe Bay. A place where sunsets are legendary. Arnside and Silverdale form an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England, covering just 29 square miles, on the border between Lancashire and Cumbria, adjoining Morecambe Bay and the Kent Estuary.

With plenty of great pubs, in particular the Albion, with outdoor seating overlooking the prom, and the ‘world famous’ Arnside Chippy, there are lots of options for food and drink here. There are also interesting gift shops, art galleries, bakeries and cafes along the front of the village too. If you want walks and bike rides this is a great location – and the ‘Cross Bay Walks’ leave from the pier a few times a year – led for years by the Queens Guide Over Sands, Cedric Robinson, these fundraising walks are an incredible experience. But never to be taken without a guide as the tides and quicksand here are very unpredictable.

Arnside Knott is the little fell that dominates the area: a morning’s climb up here gives lovely views right across the Bay and to the Lake District fells beyond. Wander back through the lovely woodlands and pathways to make a longer walk of it. Close by at Far Arnside is the medieval ruin of Arnside Tower, interesting for a wander. In Arnside itself, there’s a little stone-built pier, with benches and fantastic views across the estuary, where you can sit and watch the Arnside bore roll in. A siren sounds when the tide is turning, as this estuary and tidal system is lethal and has claimed many lives over the years. Not a place to swim, though you see people paddling kayaks, paddle boarding, and even ‘surfing’ the bore.

Further inland towards Silverdale is a network of quiet lanes, woodlands and lovely views. The RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss is another lovely spot worth a visit to enjoy the migrating birdlife and wildlife in this area. If you’re lucky you’ll see bittern, heron, perhaps a murmuration of starlings, and roaming deer. The other benefit of the weather here is it's often clear and sunny, whilst you watch the rain falling in the Lake District in the distance!

Book your Arnside holiday cottage today and enjoy the delights of this beautiful area.
