“There were several disappointing things about this property and some good ones.”
There was a bad smell from the drains in the bathrooms on the 1st and 2nd floors on the east side (St Herberts Street side) which didn't go away despite applications of bleach. There was poor water pressure to the top floor (west side) bathroom shower and the hot water to the bath in that bathroom didn't provide enough hot enough water to run a proper bath. The central heating and heated towel rails were not working properly to begin with and there were no instructions in the house to help us resolve this. The plumber came very quickly to help with this (and also to fix a toilet which wasn't working) and he explained that it is a 3 zone system with a thermostat on each floor, that the towel rails run off the heating system and not the hot water, so it's necessary to have the heating on to make the towel rails come on. The top floor radiators etc were not working because they needed bleeding, which we could have done ourselves had there been the appropriate tool. The house information folder was sparse - not only was there nothing to help us with the heating, there were no instructions for some of the appliances, eg. the washing machine and tumble dryer. The towels were very skimpy, thin and poor quality. This had been mentioned in previous reviews but doesn't seem to have been addressed and indicates some lack of care for the finer details from the owner. There was little in the way of cleaning products supplied, apart from washing up liquid and dishwashing tablets (the latter were not replenished at the end of our first of two weeks). There was no bathroom/toilet cleaner, nor proper cleaner for the ceramic hob which doesn't appear to have been cleaned properly for very long time. There were enough dishcloths and tea towels. There were only 4 dining chairs - other seating for dining was benches (which are not comfortable), presumably because the layout of the kitchen/diner with the large central island made what was a fairly large space actually quite cramped and there wouldn't have been room. We're glad to see that the reference to the "gorgeous patio" in the description of the property on the website when we booked has been dropped - it is a small space squeezed between the front of the house and the parking area and faces north. The automatic motion sensitive lights in the hall/landings are a good idea for energy saving but they don't always come on in time to give light as you pass and as there's no way of overriding them to switch on lights it's potentially hazardous on the stairs. Good things: the local rep responded as quickly as she could to our problems with the heating and plumbing and got the plumber to come immediately - he mended the toilet on the spot and sorted out the heating. She also went out and bought 4 new anti-slip mats for the bath/showers and brought them round the same day. On another occasion the local rep brought round batteries for the TV remotes at our request. Location, location, location - the house is very close to the centre of town Parking - very good (and rare) for such a central location - ample space for 3 cars, 4 if you're clever. 4 good sized bedrooms with ensuite. Plenty of hanging space, but no drawers for small items/stuff you wouldn't normally hang up. Comfortable beds, though there should maybe be a question for potential guests about the suitability of feather duvets and pillows for anyone with allergies. TV in every room. Good WiFi. Overall, we enjoyed our stay (we had excellent weather) and the majority of our issues could be addressed with a little more care and attention to detail by the owner.
