“We found Beckwood to be a perfect place for our large group to spread out.”

The cottage was beautiful & large garden great for the dogs to run around, although not enclosed, which we knew. The scenery was breathtaking & we found several walks close to us. It would have been nice to have pointers as to where we were allowed to walk being surrounded by farms so that we could be sure we weren’t trespassing! Aira falls was only 4 miles down the road! Which was amazing! Our one criticism was the rather forceful notice that we were to hoover & clean so no trace of our ...

Also the note saying no dogs on furniture or in the bedrooms. This tainted our stay as several of the doors (downstairs bedroom & front door - which we had to keep locked so no escapees! Were the worst.) If we had previous information about this, we would have brought a stair gate with us. Constantly worried that our dogs were in areas they shouldn’t be or leaving hairs, which of course anll dogs do! Our dogs are a part of our family, hence searching for a ‘dog friendly’ cottage. We found it very disappointing to feel our dogs weren’t really welcome at all. We have stayed in many cottages with our dogs before & of course were respectful, leaving the rentals as we would expect to find them. But never have been asked to hoover a property before leaving! The dish washer door was also broken with a screw hanging out of one side, which my son in law caught his hip on. - (just for your information.) Other than the ‘dog’ issue, we had a lovely 4 days & would probably have booked again as the proximity to Penrith & many other places to visit was perfect for us. Thank you.

Location is amazing with fell views everywhere The owners have definitely refreshed the house inc new sofas, beds and furniture Our only observation is that the kitchen units are very tired. Needs new doors and plinths Its a very comfy house with loads of space

“The location is beautiful in all directions.”

There was unwelcome noise from the building site next door and from frequent clay pigeon shooting. There is no such thing as a “semi enclosed” garden simply an unenclosed garden. It’s a big stretch to describe the house as having WiFi when it only extends to the living room. The overall maintenance of the house is poor. There are threadbare carpets on the upstairs landing. The wooden garden furniture is rotten and rather wobbly. A ground floor cupboard contains hanging electrical wires and electrical boxes not attached to back boxes (no idea if these are live but they are accessible to curious children). There are numerous chipped plates and mugs. The kitchen cabinets are tired with peeling paint. The floor tiles in the master en suite are extensively broken. The showers go cold if anyone flushes a loo or turns on a tap. The external window frames are degraded due to lack of maintenance. If it wasn’t for the location this house would be in big trouble.

“The property was in a perfect location, easy to find and with stunning views.”

The living room was cosy, the beds were comfortable and the bathrooms clean. There were a few things that were missing for us and the up keep and cleanliness let it down. There was cobwebs everywhere and dust underneath all the furniture. The windows were in need of a clean too. Dogs were not to go upstairs but no gate to keep them down on the stairs, the garden had dog poop left in it from previous guests, lots of cobwebs and dirty windows, drips on kitchen cupboards doors and arround the dishwasher, base boards hanging off in the kitchen and utility, there where a couple of cups and glasses needed cleaning on arrival too. There is no outdoor lighting for letting the dogs out on a night, the heating looks simple but we had two bedrooms that were freezing on arrival and refused to heat up, and two that were roasting and we couldn't cold down. There was no bin for hot ash but we were asked to clean out the fireplace. We made the most of our weekend in this beautiful part of the country but the house just needed a couple of tweaks for us.

“We were delighted with our stay at Beckwood.”

As a place central to where several family members live we were looking for a base to be able to entertain others too and it did not disappoint. The only thing that I would say that was a ‘blip’ was that we had to source and purchase a stairgate to prevent our dogs from accessing the upstairs. It was a pity- given that 3 dogs were allowed to stay at the property-that in view of the cream carpets upstairs one was not provided. However, would certainly return to Beckwood and thank you for the memories which were made. ❤️

“Stunning property set in a beautiful landscape with views over blencathra.”

The house was very comfortable and kitchen has all the utensils you would need. The only issues we had were, the house was quite cold and the heating didn’t seem to be controllable. there was no hot water on our second night and through to the morning we left. Also there is no separation between the gardens for the cottage so the cottage next door was allowing there dog to wonder unattended and allowing it to use our garden as a toilet and not cleaning it up.

“We had an exceptional stay at the property, loved the location, facilities and comfort of the cottage.”

The scenery outside was stunning, we were to lucky to watch the sunset right from our beds! Kitchen, showers, towels & linen were of high quality, definitely a home to relax and rejuvenate yourself. Only feedback would be missing few essentials - kitchen tissues and laundry detergent. Urgently wanted to wash few clothes but was missing detergent, had to drive all the way to Penrith! A missing essential for a property such thoughtfully setup with every other household essentials.

“We had a lovely couple of days staying and it worked well for three generations of our family.”

The kitchen was fantastic and well supplied with different things for cooking in and plenty of crockery. I don't think there was any instructions on how to turn down or off the heating, particularly upstairs, which got very hot. There also no summer weight duvets available, which would have helped. Otherwise, all great.

The house is a great size and spacious. They have literally everything you could think of for cooking/caring for a family. Beds were comfortable with soft bedding. Yes some things need some TLC and it would be great if the garden was fenced but we would definitely visit again.

The views in the morning were spectacular. There was plenty of space and a lovely lounge and kitchen to use. The utility with a washer was very handy as we had a little one with our group. Only thing was it was looking a bit tired in places- few broken tiles in the bathroom and some cobwebs high up (rest of the property was spotless).

Ideal for multi generational family and dog friendly with secure grounds for them to run round in. Not entirely toddler friendly as ground floor open plan with open access to stairs as no stair gate available. Accommodation was well equipped with separate hallway and utility room . Poor WiFi connection and availability. Highly recommended .

“The views from Beckwood are just amazing especially if you are lucky with the weather like we were.”

Great Mell Fell out of the front windows and Blencathra to the rear. Loved the joyful sight and sound of the gambolling & bleating lambs in the surrounding fields. If you are looking to get away from the world this is the ideal location, yet it is only a short drive to Ullswater, Keswick & Penrith. One downside is that the two twin upstairs rooms were very hot even though we tried to turn down the thermostats - I think others have mentioned this too. Otherwise it was very comfortable and had everything you could need. Lovely to sit at the dining table in the morning sunshine and also enjoyed sketching the landscape sat outside at the picnic table. Like I said we were unbelievably lucky with the weather.

“The cottage was in a lovely rural setting but was not as dog friendly as first thought, the garden was not secure and the sheep did wander near to the back garden much to the delight of our dogs and the last tenants dog poo bags left outside.”

Inside the cottage was tired , the bedding and towels were exceptionally clean but sadly the house was not to the same standard ( dirty windows, kitchen cupboards fronts, peeling off ) The bedroom downstairs was noisy when people were moving around upstairs and was extremely hot when it rained because the skylight windows could not be opened. We did have a lovely weekend weather wise and took the opportunity to be out of the cottage. The price does reflect the standard of the holiday cottage but I would be reluctant to pay a higher price in high season .

“Lovely premises easy to find and great for hill/general walking, beautiful views over Blencathra, good enclosed garden for dogs once the gates on the track were closed.”

Before going I read a few reviews that dog walking was not welcome which I thought strange, but within an hour of getting there we found the Matterdale forest walk just up the road a bit where the dogs could get off the lead safely. Cottage was very comfortable, well equipped and warm as it was a cold but fine spell of weather, there were 5 of us in the party and ample room for everyone and our kit. Thoroughly recommend also note that logs were supplied for the wood burner

“Overall a fabulous stay and we would come again however there was a few things that I would suggest needs improvement.”

Firstly, the cottage was so hot and there was no instructions on the heating system or how to turn it down, including the underfloor heating. It seemed wasteful but we needed to open the doors and the windows as this was the only way to cool down the room! In the downstairs room however there is only skylights which, if it is raining, it will rain in and wet whatever is in the room so be careful. We also used the washing machine however this was dirty with a lot of white dog hair within it so would suggest this also needs cleaning by the owners after each use of the cottage. The owners also put a lot of restrictions on check out and implemented a 9am checkout which was a bit of a rush when we were asked to hoover, mop, separate all the bins, strip all the beds and leave everything better than how we found it. The upstairs shower was also broken however the owners did partially refund us which was generous of them. Overall we would come again and enjoyed our stay however, would recommend these issues above need looking into/more information within the property to avoid disappointment by others in the future.

“Lovely house very well equipped.”

Everything you want and more. Very clean and tidy. Fab new cooker. Had a lovely 2 weeks. In a beautiful position with amazing views of Blencathra. And a safe garden for the dog. Did have a couple of problems which were sorted out for us. We have stayed here a few times and obviously a lot of money has been spent doing it up. The only problem we had were the sofas ,which could do with either being replaced ,or seat cushions being re stuffed.

“The property is in a beautiful setting and well positioned for Keswick and Penrith.”

We thought we were the only property but turns out we were attached to a smaller rental property. Inside the property is large, spacious and well presented - the communal areas are perfect for large groups. The kitchen is well catered for and the utility room was well used as we had typically British weather. As the bedrooms of the larger property sit over the smaller property there is a problem with noise. Not sure how this can be overcome as it is an old property - maybe thicker underlay on the carpets? The bedrooms were an excellent size and well presented but all of us suffered from interrupted sleep due to uncomfortable mattresses. There is WiFi in the property which is very intermittent - it would be helpful to have more information on the local area (walks etc) so you are not so reliant on the WiFi. Overall, we had a lovely stay at the property.

“Overall the property was perfect for our needs and without sounding derogatory I was pleased that it was not perfect.”

The garden was great, once we were the only occupants of the two cottages, as we could close the gate and the dogs could go out, albeit still accompanied, and roam further. The only issue outside was that the grass could have been cut. The property itself was cleaned to a satisfactory level and comfortable but we had an issue with the hot water (we had none, and neither did next door) and a leak on the main bathroom toilet. We had plumbers out on three occasions to try and sort both issues. Hopefully this has now been resolved and there will be plenty of hot water for future holiday makers. The owner was extremely apologetic and did get on the case straight away, so thank you for that.

Window sills in twin room were covered in dried dead flies and then the main bathroom toilet had a leak at the back. Overall the property was well equipped, but just the sofas were very soft and a bit tired looking. They could do with some sofa savers under the cushions for additional support

“We enjoyed our stay at Beckwood cottage.”

The surrounding area was lovely. However, we did encounter a problem with the shower leaking which meant that we could not use it for a few days. However, we cannot fault the management company as they acted quickly on the matter. It is worth noting that there is a few repairs that are needed at the property. This includes the windowsill at the rear of the property where the slate has fallen off.

“Inaccurate description of gardens - said small enclosed garden and semi enclosed garden, the small garden had no gate and was part of a different let.”

Listed as Sky tv, it was Freeview. Not properly maintained, the Velox widows jammed and the pole was broken, kitchen windows do not fully open, key missing from Balcony doors. Main bedroom base sheet to small for bed. Floor mop absolutely filthly. No Broom or dustpan and brush. As a dog owner the incorrect description of the property is unacceptable and causes unnecessary problems. Beckwood would be a lovely property if it was properly maintained and had an easily added garden fence and gate from the front door to the hedge. This was our first time booking with Sykes, with previous lets from other companies we have never been mislead, you really need to check your descriptions of your properties, to ensure the details are accurate.

“Lovely home great location stunning views.”

Lovely watching the horses in the field and swallows flying around. Great sized home for a large group and plenty of space. Does need a little tweaking here and their .Cleaner really needs to pay attention to the sinks and drainage in shower .Had to clean myself as they were full of hair .I do think 9 is abit early to be out of the cottage. But had a lovely stay and the views are fantastic.

“The property was excellent for four people and three dogs.”

The bedrooms were spacious and light, it felt that we were not on top of one another. Two shower rooms and three toilets worked very well. The kitchen and dining area was excellent with fantastic views from every window. The downside was the heating was not working properly when we first arrived and with the cold weather felt very uncomfortable. The problem was confirmed by a maintenance man who called for some paint pots from under the stairs. We all felt the coal fire was too small for the room. Overall, it was a very successful and joyful stay, we are thinking of booking again next year for a longer stay.

“The property was lovely.”

Especially the beds, bath kitchen and log burner. The only things that let it down was only one TV and not a smart one. Very few channels and delayed remote. It drove us mad. There isn't much to do on cold wet nights and we got very bored tbh. The other thing was the light bulbs kept blowing and there was no way of refreshing them. One was flashing like a strove in the lounge for two nights. Also a message left by the owners said there were appliance instructions left for us and a visitors book. There was neither and it took us ages just to figure out how to set the washer machine up. Also wasn't able to figure out his to dry clothes had to take some home still wet. Then there was no balcony available either. But the place was clean, spacious, warm and lovely and in a good position for Keswick and Windermere so win win.

“Our group was made up of 4 adults and 2 dogs, the area is not dog friendly.”

Signs are up at the fields saying if your dog is off the leash they will be shot. The worst thing was we were inundated with flies, we think this is due to birds that are nesting under the roof all the way round the building and their droppings are not being cleaned as when we arrived there were piles of it so the house was full of flies and we had to keep the windows closed. The windows in the master suite really need cleaned as we couldn't see out of them. The bed maybe be a superking size but the mattress is not. The mattress did not fit the bed and the bedding did not fit the mattress. We were told upon booking the following; We would have access to a field for the dogs to run about. There was no field just a shared lawn. That there was a TV in the master suite and their wasn't. That the cottage had Sky TV - which it hasn't. Our friends were booked in with us for the week but they left on the Sunday as the dogs were getting very stressed as the horses, cows and sheep came up to the garden and got angry at the dogs. Our friends only got 2 nights stay instead of 7. I'm very angry about this and I will think twice before booking with Sykes in the future. We have booked with Sykes before and never been let down but this year.

“Beckwood is a very comfortable, clean, well appointed and homely property which accommodated our party of 6 adults, 2 children and a lively spaniel perfectly.”

The views are stunning and we were surrounded by wildlife and birds. The dog loved the freedom of the large garden and we could safely let her out to play as it is fully enclosed. Facilities are excellent with every need catered for. However, we had only one problem and that was with the hob on the range being somewhat temperamental which was an annoyance when cooking for a large family. Eating out is great with excellent hostelries close by - The White Horse Inn at Scales (A66) and the Troutbeck Inn a mile up the road. Overall, would highly recommend.

“This house is in a great location for exploring this part of the lakes.”

We found it very practical for a group of outdoorsy people. The kitchen was well equipped and having a separate utility room and also roomy entrance was great for coats and boots. Lovely sunsets through the dining room windows. The house was clean and we really enjoyed our stay. My general feed back is there are a few things that need attention. It had been mentioned in a previous post that lots of light bulbs need replacing. The house has many many lights so its not dark, but its a bit odd so many need replacing. The toilet seat in main bathroom tries to bite your bum as it wont stay up. Towel rail in main bathroom doesn't work. Towel rail in ensuite quite rusty. We stayed in January. The house has a thermostat in every room and was incredibly hot. We turned down all of then but still had to open windows. Lastly the stove rings on the electric cooker. Only 2 seem to function normally. They all heat up when turned on but only 2 actually stay hot. Anyway as I said, its a very practical space and if you are planning to spend most of your time outside then it is absolutely ideal and overall a comfortable house and we thought good value for money.

“The property itself was lovely but it was completely let down by the standard of the cleanliness which was very poor.”

In order for my family to feel comfortable we had to clean the property on arrival. It was not up to the usual standard I have come to expect, which was really disappointing given the amount we paid for 7 days. The dishwasher doesn’t function properly. One of the ovens on the range cooker is not working properly. The left hand oven will gently warm or heat to 220c nothing else. A number of bulbs had not been replaced. I have booked through Sykes over a number of years and whilst the property itself was good, the attention to cleanliness and ensuring facilities are working was poor. Overall disappointed.

“We had a wonderful time at Beckwood.”

The cottage is extremely well equipped with everything we needed as a family. It is positioned in a very quiet and peaceful area, with stunning views in all directions, especially at sunset. Our dog could run around the large enclosed garden safely, which was a bonus.The beds are all comfortable, as is the lounge with the log burner. We would definitely like to return, and are very grateful to the owners for making the cottage so homely... thank you!

The double glass doors in the dining area can not be opened. The upstairs toilet seat slides around The fire extinguisher that should be in the kitchen is in the laundry room. Thanks for the place though, very nice place for

“The property was in a great location with stunning views.”

The house had everything you would ever need to use. The house was clean and had very comfy beds and seating. However, the massive downside was that there were no blinds in the downstairs windows, which meant the whole living space (kitchen,dining room & living room) was so hot it was like being a greenhouse/conservatory. Even though the property had many windows we could not open any of these as there were an excessive amount of flies, which within minutes would consume the whole house if a window or door were open. This made everything uncomfortably very hot. We would however love to stay again but would need to have blinds downstairs.

“Beckwood is a stunning location.”

Only 10 mins from Keswick but you feel as if you have The Lakes to yourself. The property is spacious, clean and very comfortable. Sykes were great and phoned on day 2 to make sure we were settled in well. All very highly recommended!
