Take a scenic stroll around Stock Ghyll Force and Ambleside Roman Fort, before challenging your partner to a game at White Platts Miniature Golf.

Just a walk away awaits Windermere, the centre of adventure.

This is especially true at Brockhole on Windermere, where you can scratch that explorer’s itch through archery, kayaking, and zip-lines.

Visit the National Trust Windermere and Troutbeck Park and Gardens, before hiking to the Orrest Head Viewpoint.

Dive into England’s largest lake at Lake Windermere, then float through the Windermere Jetty Museum.

A fan of William Wordsworth?

Travel that bit further to Grasmere, where the former homes of Wordsworth beg to be toured at Wordsworth Grasmere and National Trust Allan Bank and Grasmere.

Afterwards, enjoy a coffee break and row across a tranquil lake pulled from the pages of a storybook at Faeryland Grasmere.

Of course, scenic marvels are never far in the Lake District National Park – peaks are plotted in every direction; Scafell Pike is just a short drive away!

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside with its numerous shops makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips, and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and the lakeside at Waterhead with parkland offering lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach. A walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre. Ambleside has plenty of restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes from great fish & chips to its two Michelin Star restaurants and all tastes in between are catered for.
