Joseph “The Cow Byre was a fantastic place to stay and a great base to explore the Eden Valley and the Lake District from.”
The cottage itself is cosy and comfortable with everything needed for a great getaway with some lovely touches to make it feel homely. The hosts were welcoming, friendly and helpful, but mostly left us to ourselves, meaning it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Highlights were the lovely bathtub, the wood burner and the birds (and red squirrel!) visiting the feeders right outside the back. Would highly recommend staying here!

The hosts were so welcoming and helped to make our stay so special and the many treats left for us on arrival were such a lovely touch. Tim “Beautiful hideaway with everything you need.”
Blissfully quiet and surrounded by nature - loved watching the birds. Great location, close to North Dales, Lake District and North Pennines - not that I had the time to explore as much as I'd have liked. Owners were very kind with their welcome pack and although I didn't get a chance to meet them, I had everything I needed. Would definitely recommend to others and hope I can return one day.

Gemma “We had an awesome time at The cow Byre, it’s a beautiful cottage.”
It’s been lovingly restored, definitely one of our most favourite cottages. We love the area, it’s stunning. The seating area outside we loved, we sat outside for breakfast and enjoyed seeing the wildlife. We saw the woodpecker, first time we had seen one in the flesh! The welcome pack was the best we have ever received. Thank you. The mattress was a little hard for us but I appreciate that’s personal preference. It would not stop us staying again, hopefully we can book for later in the year.

Rebecca “Really lovely cottage interesting and quirky, a little red squirrel joined us for breakfast.”
- Rebecca, July 2022 -
Hayley “We had a lovely stay here at the cow byre.”
It was clean , comfortable and a relaxing stay. Two things we think may be nice is some kind of little light at the bottom of the stairs for when you travel to the loo in the night and a clothes airer. We will recommend this property and we would live to return.
- Hayley, July 2022 -
Gary “Very rustic, photos are very accurate, Lovely views and isolated.”
Found the property could have done with a good cleaning ie. Dust and cobwebs on beams and skirting. Found the television to small and desperately needs a replacement sofa, one thing you need on holiday is a comfortable seat to sit and watch a good television. We have been to lots of holiday properties and this was the first time the owners that lived next door never came and said hello. Enjoyed the week and the red squirrels are lovely to watch. I hope I am not coming over as negative but if you don't say what you Found nothing changes. We would like to thank the owners for the goodies left for us on arrival.
- Gary, July 2022 -
John “Everything you need for a comfortable stay.”
Full of character and very clean. Views you never tire of. The Cow Brye is a credit to the owners.
- John, July 2022 -
Adrian “A wonderful property an absolute credit to the owners.”
Had a lovely action packed visit making the most of the beautiful countryside that this part of the world has to offer, this was enhanced by the fact that we knew we were returning to the comfort of the Byre afterwards. It was a bonus that there was a safe place to store our bikes and walking kit. A wonderful few days was had. Thank you to a lovely family for allowing us to stay in their delightful cottage
- Adrian, June 2022Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback. You were such a lovely couple it was a pleasure to have you stay. We really enjoy it when our guest appreciate the area we live in. Property Owner

- Robert, May 2022 -
Leslie “The Cow Byre is a lovely place to stay and the owners take a lot of care to set out their cottage in a welcoming fashion - there were lots of happy ‘surprises’ inside to make you feel right at home!”
The view from the lounge is gorgeous and bird and red squirrel feeders are close by giving a constantly changing view of their much varied wildlife. A woodpecker visitor each day was a joy. Everything one could need is at hand although a clock (a quiet one) in the lounge area would perhaps be beneficial. We wanted a quiet, relaxed break away from any bustle and this location is perfect for that. We cannot do long walks but drove to close by local towns and villages through the superb rural settings that surround the property. Just the job!
- Leslie, April 2022 -
John “Lovely cottage with original features.”
You could pay just for the views over the Eden Valley from the cottage it was amazing. The host was very welcoming and friendly we will definitely book again.
- John, February 2022 -
Hyun “We enjoyed our a week break from City life.”

Very clean and comfortable house with everything we needed, the hosts were so friendly and helpful and even left us some lovely treats! The home is just a drive away from everything you need and you can see beautiful views from the window, couldn't recommend it enough!

Harry “The cow byre was the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of city living, beautiful, tranquil scenery and a euphoric sense of calm whilst you’re there.”
Brilliant place to relax and unwind, would highly recommend
- Harry, October 2021 -
Stephanie “Excellent last minute break, booked the day before and couldn't praise the cottage and the owners anymore.”
The cottage was gorgeous and exactly what we were looking for, lovely area, amazing walks, and very comfy and cosy. The little extras such as the wine, biscuits, fudge, milk and eggs just made it that little bit more special. We took our 2 year old little man and the hosts children made his stay fun, they let him use their play house, sandpit and bikes. He loved it. Overall we had a lovely stay and would definately come back again.
- Stephanie, October 2021 -
Natalie “I can’t recommend this cottage enough, it was even better than I imagined.”
The character of the place means you’re constantly finding new things to look at, and the layout makes perfect use of the space, it has everything you need! The bath in the bedroom is both quirky and indulgent, and the whole place is in a perfect location to explore the area and then come back to a cosy stay. We particularly enjoyed reading about the history of the Cow Byre. If you enjoy the simple things in life, with that extra splash of indulgence, then this is the place for you. The hosts were lovely and personable, and I’m sure we’ll be back!
- Natalie, October 2021 -
Alice “A marvellous place to stay, immaculately clean with all the things you could need plus some more lovely thoughtful touches.”
Owners were lovely but not intrusive, well situated to explore Yorkshire and the Lakes. Would definitely return in the future.
- Alice, October 2021 -
Julian “Firstly, Comfy bed.”
Bath in bedroom quaint, enjoyed using. Upstairs room fine. Stairs in our opinion dodgy, very small treads. Also steps up to lounge dodgy because of poor lighting. Flag stones not at all clean.Could not walk around in bare feet. Kitchen dark and dingy, needs more lighting. Cooker no at all clean. Did not use glass hob as dirty and greasy as was tray covered in tin foil inside oven disguising greasy tray underneath so also did not use. Kitchen table dirty underneath as only sat once with, unfortunately white trousers on. In fact such a tight squeeze not able to sit comfortably for two. Iron scorched so could not use.Toilet seat not hygienic in these times of covid. Old wooden seat. Not comfortable using so spread toilet paper all around during our stay. Appreciate history of this but repeat not hygienic. Door to toilet a waste of time. Did not sit outside due to flies and rats trying to get on the bird feeder. Every day chasing flies inside with fly spray provided despite not opening windows or patio doors. Gifts left. Very grateful, but eggs and fudge way out of date so left them obviously. Very dusty cottage throughout. Very disappointed so left two days early. No contact with us to ask why.
- Julian, August 2021Dear Julian I am really sorry to hear that you never had an enjoyable stay at the Cow Byre. As you can see from all my previous feedback, we have had very positive feedback. The Cow Byre is very rustic and quirky as the pictures show and we pride ourselves on cleanliness and attention to detail. Unfortunately this will not be to everyone's taste and we cannot alter the layout/structural details to please all. Again I am so sorry that you have not had a good stay with us. Kind Regards Lisa Elliott Cow Byre Owner Property Owner

The Red Squirrels on the feeders outside the window, great visit to Barnard Castle with its superb Museum, the walking on the Moors not too far away
- Philip, August 2021 -
Claire “It’s such a lovely place to stay, in a wonderful location.”
We loved the open plan design which really did make the most of the beautiful views. The highlight was definitely the visits from the little red squirrels - such a joy to watch. Mark recommended a brilliant cycle route which we appreciated. There are so many great places to walk and you can walk/cycle from the door too which is always a bonus. The only thing that could make it even better would be the patio furniture. A couple of more comfortable chairs would be our only suggestion and make a big difference when enjoying the views, sunsets and squirrels. Really fabulous stay - thanks.
- Claire, July 2021 -
Alex “Fabulous property.”
Quiet location. Lovely hosts next door who were so friendly and helpful. The property was even better than we expected, well equipped with a lovely view and real bonus of some beautiful wildlife right outside the back door. Couldn’t have asked for a more relaxing and enjoyable week.
- Alex, July 2021 -
Cliff “A brilliant week from start to finish.”
There were lots of homely touches in the Cow Byre that made it feel special, too numerous to mention them all - however the wonderful welcome pack and card from the owners were examples. Lovely views of the countryside and the local wildlife.
- Cliff, May 2021 -
Vicky “This is one of the nicest holiday cottages we have ever stayed in.”
Fabulous views, garden wildlife to keep you entertained. Perfect hosts with a welcome pack on arrival. These little extra touches really made this something special. A fabulous much needed break after lockdown.
- Vicky, May 2021 -
Anna “What a fabulous little cottage!”
The location is brilliant, so much to see close by, spoilt for choice of walks. The views from the cottage are brilliant, and so so restful. Our hosts live next door, and were really helpful and had some good suggestions for walks. Cottage felt very luxurious, with some nice touches, fresh flowers, wine and fudge! And a generous supply of logs for the fire. A fabulous week in a gorgeous cottage
- Anna, April 2021 -
Jennifer “A delightful cottage in a beautiful area, we returned for a second time, the ...”
A delightful cottage in a beautiful area, we returned for a second time, the cottage has everything you need, watching the wildlife on the bird feeder and even a red squirrel paid us a visit, definitely recommended for a relaxing stay
- Jennifer, September 2020 -
Tim “The property was a characterful cottage created out of the Cow Byre of the adjacent farm house.”
It showed many signs of careful craftsmanship. The location overlooking the Eden valley and between the North and South Stainmore moors was idyllic. Sheep and cows and birdlife in abundance and the occasional red squirreI! It was a good place to explore the Westmorland, northern Yorkshire and Durham dales. The welcome card and goodies were well received as were the freindly encounters with Mark our neighbour. The interesting open plan layout of the accommodation made for careful nocturnal visits and early morning abloutions!! Watch the stairs!! We will certainly recommend this property to our family and friends.
- Tim, August 2020 -
Luke “The Cow Byre was perfect for our short break, the property was spotless had everything we needed and more.”
The location (and wildlife) are fantastic - We'd love to go back!
- Luke, July 2020 -
Hannah “We had an amazing stay at the cow byre!”
It was in a perfect location for exploring both the Yorkshire Dales and lakes. The cottage itself had everything you need plus more! Especially loved the bath and watching the lovely birds on the feeder! We will definitely be back!
- Hannah, July 2020 -
Ian “We really enjoyed our stay at the cow byre , very clean , nice touch having fresh milk in the fridge on arrival along with some extra goodies.”
I would add that the regular addition of red squirrels , wood peckers and other wild life all within 10 feet of your patio doors was unbelievable. Superb accommodation, many thanks.
- Ian, July 2020 -
Alastair “Please see Booking.”
Com comments - Tranquil, rural location. Comfortable with stylish design in keeping with farm conversion. Views of surrounding countryside. Able to watch many birds and a red squirrel from the living-room window. Handy base for exploring the Eden Valley, Swaledale etc. Friendly hosts.
- Alastair, March 2020 -
Guy “This was a great little cottage, nicely decorated and the layout was well thought out.”
The location was just what we were after, providing great access to a number of local walks as well as a short drive to the Lakes, Penines and Dales. We spent most of our days out and about, so coming back to this comfy and cosy little cottage was just we needed after a long days hike. We could enjoy the comfortable bath, or take a refreshing shower and then relax by the log fire. The icing on the cake was the little gift of wine, biscuits and chocolates; the owners really make you feel welcome with the provision of not just towels but also dressing gowns and high quality toiletries. It was a real treat coming here, and felt like the owners really cared about their guests. We'll definitely be back at some point soon.
- Guy, February 2020 -
Simon “This is the second time we have stayed at the Cow Byre, and it was just as comfortable as the first.”
We liked coming back as it gave us the opportunity to explore the walks and area further, but also to spend more time within the cottage relaxing. The cottage itself is such a perfect place to remove all the tech from our lives and just enjoy being away from it all. It is warm, and cosy, and the views are stunning! The first time we stayed we saw a red squirrel. This time, on one of our walks we managed to spy a Pine Martin! We couldn't believe it! The only reason I gave less than perfect for cleanliness are the cobwebs above the bed in the bedroom, but in all honesty, its expected in a place like this. we loved our stay and will definitely be booking again once lockdown is over. many thanks.
- Simon, January 2020 -
Ben “We had an absolutely wonderful holiday.”
The cottage was beautiful and the views were absolutely stunning.
- Ben, November 2019 -
John “The Cow Byre is a gorgeous haven in the North.”
We had a very relaxing (and cosy) stay and the cottage was perfectly situated to explore both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. Mark was very helpful and attentive. We will be back!
- John, October 2019 -
Jennifer “Such a quaint cottage with everything you should need, comfortable bed and spotless clean, the lounge has a cosy log burner but we didn’t need to use it as it was warm enough with the radiators, the lovely patio area has a bird feeder and we spent ages watching the birds and mouse family queuing up for the nuts, even a red squirrel, the cottage is situated down a lane so a very quiet with beautiful views, would definitely return.”
- Jennifer, October 2019 -
Molly “A lovely cosy cottage which was perfect for a relaxing holiday!”
We loved the traditional features like the fire and the bath and the overall style of the Cow Byre was stunning and had a modern touch. The wine, chocolates and the eggs were a lovely gesture and was a lovely suprise when we arrived. Mark was also really helpful, especially when arriving! Thank you again! We'd highly reccomend the Cow Byre, a beautiful little cottage perfect for couples who want to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Yorkshire Dales/ Lake District!
- Molly, September 2019 -
Holly “We enjoyed a lovely two night stay at The Cow Byre and could not fault the cottage at all.”
Having some chocolates, biscuits and a bottle of bubbly waiting for us when we arrived was a wonderful little touch that we did not expect. In the cottage was an abundance of leaflets and information on places to visit and eat which was extremely useful. It was easy enough to visit Bowness on Windermere from the cottage location and it is well worth the drive to get there. We will definitely be back to visit.
- Holly, July 2019 -
Stephen “Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this wonderful and remote little cottage.”
The cottage was clean and well kept and we were greeted by a card, wine and biscuits. Great stuff. The views were excellent from the patio doors and we even had a little Red Squirrel visit us one evening. However, the views are somewhat blocked now by the owners extension to their home so the website photos require updating to reflect this. Overall, though. my wife and I were made up by this little place and would definitely visit again.
- Stephen, May 2019 -
Michelle ““Stayed here for my partners big 50.”
from the moment we opened the door , it was amazing !!! The place oozes character , charm and coziness. Views from the room are amazing. The bath in the bedroom is a great idea!! so much imagination has gone into this cottage. Very very quirky. We ventured into Windermere and Keswick. A 40 minute drive but it's worth it just for the scenery. We booked a spa day at Anorher Place hotel in Ullswater I can highly recommend if you fancy a day chilling with mountains to look at from the pool. We will definitely return Our thanks to mark and lisa who were great hosts and on hand for useful info. Thank you Michelle and Roger
- Michelle, May 2019 -
Gemma “It was a cute little cottage, loved hearing the birds and lambs.”
- Gemma, April 2019 -
Emma “I have just returned from a fabulous four night break at Cow Byre Cottage.”
The cottage was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and housed an abundance of amenities including a log burning fire. The addition of a roll top bath in the bedroom was fantastic and the bed was super comfy. On arrival, we were greeted with a welcome card, wine and homemade cookies. The views from the cottage were breathtaking. The cottage is in close proximity to Kirkby Stephen and other surrounding areas. I would without hesitation recommend Cow Byre to anyone visiting the Lake District. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
- Emma, April 2019 -
Rob “Wonderful little property for two, complimentary wine and chocolates upon arrival.”
Ideal get-a-way and only 10minute drive from the centre
- Rob, March 2019 -
Naomi “The Cow Byre is an absolutely stunning cottage - tastefully and creatively decorated with reclaimed materials, and with so many luxurious touches.”
This out-of-the-way spot was the perfect base for some beautiful walks (we particularly enjoyed a 10-mile round hike from the nearby Tan Hill Inn), but we could have happily spent the entire holiday in the cottage - watching the birds from the patio, reading by the fire, and watching the sun set over the Eden Valley. Mark was a thoughtful and attentive host, and we had a fabulous time.
- Naomi, February 2019 -
Samantha “This is a real gem.”
A lovely hide away in a perfect setting.
- Samantha, February 2019 -
Kim “We has such a great time at the cow Byre.”
Felt very welcome but also we had our space and privacy which was important to us. The cow Byre is a really perfect place to relax. The layout just works brilliantly to get you into the right mood to watch birds out the window, go for walks, read and chill. We needed it so much and were very pleased with every aspect of our stay. I loved the bath and the fact that it’s in the bedroom and the whole open plan layout makes everything feel even more luxurious. They are working on an extension next door which means occasional banging but it wasn’t continuous and really didn’t disrupt our time at all. Thanks again.
- Kim, November 2018 -
Tracey “The cow byre cottage is absolutely fantastic, the whole quirky feel and look of the place,, the luxury feel of the bedding and towels, the clean presentation and the arrival gifts , the whole break was perfect, a great base for going exploring or a romantic cosy chill out place.”
- Tracey, October 2018 -
Kathryn “The Cow Byre is one of the best holiday cottages I have stayed in.”
It is so well designed, well equipped, quirky , but cosy and comfortable at the same time. It exudes peace and tranquility and makes the most of the outstanding views across the valley. Every detail and requirement is catered for and I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending a stay at The Cow Byre.
- Kathryn, September 2018 -
David “This is the second time we have been to the Cow Byre.”
The first was in November and it did not take long to think of it when we wanted to get away after our wedding. The Cow Byre was the perfect location to relax after a busy few weeks and was excellent overall.
- David, September 2018 -
Andrew “The cottage was as we hoped: romantic, cosy, a bit unusual, comfortable, Yes, it was all of these things.”
We loved the layout, appreciated the dressing gowns and slippers, cookies, essentials in the fridge. We had to turn down the radiators as it simply got too warm with the outside weather remaining mild. Bath very much impressed my wife, the quality and comfort of the bed impressed as both. We would be very happy to make a future booking.
- Andrew, September 2018 -
Elizabeth “Would have been nice to of been informed about the building work there is an extension going up out the back so expect building noise from 8am till 5 pm did spoil the peace and quiet.”

Janet “A fabulous quirky property.”
Spent a couple of cold November days relaxing in the cottage watching the birds, and thrilled to see the red squirrels on a few occasions.Loved the bath and the cosiness.Only thing missing was a hot tub in the secluded area of the patio.Strange that there was a glass panel in the bathroom door ! Great value for money, and will be returning next year hopefully.
