    “Pleasant cottage, warm and clean.”

    Sitting room only suitable for 3 people. The very small sofa I’m afraid doesn’t seat 2 as much as the owners may think it does. We didn’t use the wood burning stove but had we wanted to we couldn’t as no logs left for us and the shop was closed. The kitchen is pleasant and opens on to a patio area. NO TEASPOONS and the rest of the cutlery is like something out of a second hand shop. There is a dishwasher and the cooker was easy to use. The fridge was iced over. Nice welcome bag with ...

We didn’t use the wood burning stove but had we wanted to we couldn’t as no logs left for us and the shop was closed. The kitchen is pleasant and opens on to a patio area. NO TEASPOONS and the rest of the cutlery is like something out of a second hand shop. There is a dishwasher and the cooker was easy to use. The fridge was iced over. Nice welcome bag with bottle of beer, firefighters and biscuits. The double bedroom has an en-suite shower over bath and there is a separate shower room too. Plenty of hot water. The beds are too short and the mattresses weren’t comfortable. The curtains in the double room kept falling off the curtain rail unless you were v careful when opening. There was no ceiling light in one of the singles and actually all the lighting is v poor. The hot tap in the shower room doesn’t close off properly so is running constantly. The swimming pool was nice but I developed earache and sore throat after swimming. You can walk from the cottage but we found it limiting with disappearing footpaths. The tracks are all ruined in places by the four wheel drives. This is our second time in this cottage. It suits our needs but we won’t book again. It doesn’t actually feel as if you are in the Lakes and we preferred our stay in Ambleside.

Ambleside 5.1 miles; Kendal 17.4 miles.

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Visitors can wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th century houses. There are many pleasant inns, teashops, guest houses and gift shops in the village, as well as the Beatrix Potter Gallery, which houses an annually changing exhibition of the famous author’s illustrations and stories. The other famous Hawkshead enthusiast, William Wordsworth, attended the Old Grammar School in 1779-87, which still stands today, and you can visit the building where the Lakeland poet developed his love of the form, and even see the desk into which he scratched his name as a small boy! Newby Bridge is ten miles away and offers attractions such as the Aquarium of the Lakes and Windermere Lake Cruises, sailing daily between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside.
