“Great location for walking straight from the door.”

Fantastic views and good sized accommodation. The outside of the cottage could do with a bit of attention as it sets an impression of arrival. The garden was overgrown and the paint on the front door faded and cracked. The driveway up to the cottage via three separate gates could do with some gravel or filling in. A normal car may struggle with ground clearance in places. Inside there is good accommodation and general cleanliness was good, although we did have to clean the oven and fridge on ...

Inside there is good accommodation and general cleanliness was good, although we did have to clean the oven and fridge on arrival before use. We also noted a lot of mouse droppings in the under sink cupboard, but it’s in the country so mice are to be expected! Similar to the outside, some of the inside was looking a little tired but nothing a lick of paint and a good dusting of the cobwebs in the skylights wouldn’t solve! We enjoyed our stay and the cottage was comfortable and warm and had everything we needed for the week.

The property

This luxurious detached Lakeland residence occupies a sublime, secluded setting within gorgeous Lakeland countryside commanding simply breathtaking uninterrupted panoramic views as far as the eye can see...

Sitting looking out through the array of picture windows, or indeed in the gorgeous garden with terrace, and gazing out over the surrounding countryside it would be easy to imagine that the plethora of fells on display have been carefully arranged to provide Cherry Garth with the most breathtaking views around.

From Hartsop Dodd in the south, sweeping around High Hartsop Dodd, Hart Crag, Fairfield and St Sunday Crag, the view is quite simply sensational and with Brotherswater twinkling away below, the scene is as near perfect as you are likely to find. For a holiday with 'wow factor' - this is a special place and one to spend your precious time together soaking up Lakeland's luxuries.

Step inside and take pleasure in the outstanding features echoed throughout, a secluded country Lake District atmosphere blends effortlessly with 21st century life but the views remain exactly the same - walk out into the gardens or admire from every true picture window, here you can't help but fall in love with the setting, but take a breath as these far reaching views are simply to die for!

Leave aside the 'million dollar views and setting' for a moment and wander into the beautiful garden with terrace and furniture, what a great place to unwind and enjoy al-fresco Lakeland life.

Whether you are celebrating a happy event or just spending time with your favourite people, Cherry Garth is a magical treat delivering sheer luxury and matching your high expectations.

Enjoy the luxury chic bathrooms, sumptuous bedrooms, 21st century kitchen, a dining area fit for any formal gathering and the relaxing living space with warming open fire and window seating and all wrapped up in sophisticated technology, are but a few things to mention. The sleepy hamlet of Hartsop within the Ullswater valley is the setting for this delightful residence, with this location having everything you could wish for. Hartsop is a lovely 'unspoilt' Lakeland village, and although found close to the busy main road be-tween Patterdale and Kirkstone Pass, the village still retains an almost hidden quality to it.

A walk through the tightly clustered community of 17th century farms and houses is about as close as you can get experiencing a typical dales village as it was a couple of centuries ago. Originally known as Low Hartsop and possibly dating from the medieval period, the village has been involved in quite a few different industries over the years; ranging from the milling of corn, quarry-ing, lead mining and of course the wool trade.

What remains now is a small farming community and a collection of charming, well-preserved cottages showing traditional features such as spinning galleries and stepped gable ends.

The majority of buildings in the village are Grade 2 listed and the village as a whole is protected by the National Trust. As far as fell walking goes, Hartsop offers an incredible choice of places to explore.

The ancient Roman route of High Street is within easy grasp, and once up onto the higher fells above the village you could easily spend a full day walking from one fell to the next.

For those with the energy to walk a little further, you could happily use Hartsop as a starting point for walks on the opposite side of the valley taking in fells such as Fairfield, St Sunday Crag, Dove Crag and Hartsop to name but a few.

Of course we mustn't forget the valley itself!

If it's a lower level walk you want then the route between Hartsop and Patterdale is a gorgeous route and the lovely secluded Brotherswater lake is just half a mile away. == Accommodation in detail A driveway leads you to the property with gate into the beautiful gardens.

Stop and gaze at the views and then enter the property; through the boot/drying room with lots of space for walking gear; the living room is a place to relax and admire the views in sumptuous furnishings by the fire complete with window seating too.

The large kitchen / dining room also boast the views and has everything you may need wrapped up in granite and natural slate, there is also an additional TV with built in DVD player and there is also a radio/docking station for playing music from your phone via bluetooth.

There is a useful utility room with access to the gardens and on the ground floor is a stunning King sized bedroom as well as a luxurious wet room with monsoon drencher shower facility.

Upstairs to two further king size bedrooms and a bathroom complete with designer slipper bath, what a great place to unwind after a day on the fells.

Outside to the delightful gardens and terrace. Location The inspiration for Wordsworth's 'Daffodills' Ullwater is the second largest lake in the English Lake District and is widely thought to be the most picturesque, being ideal for a self catering Lake District holiday.

Travelling from the central Lakes over the stunning Kirkstone Pass you will drop down into the beautiful glacial carved landscapes surrounding the Lake itself, with many quaint villages along its shore line.

The areas around the lake provide the perfect place for a restful and relaxed self-catering holiday, with plenty of opportunity for walking, exploring and getting out on the Lake. At the southern end of the Lake you will find Glenridding, a popular little village and an excellent base to explore plentiful challenging peaks but especially Helvellyn and Striding Edge and of course the exact location of Cherry Garth is Hartsop.

Hartsop is a delightful setting at the foot of Hartsop Dodd overlooking Brotherswater and close to the Brotherswater Hotel which serves bar meals etc.

The area is excellent for either touring or relaxing and there are many walks from the cottage - The High Street Ridge, Place Fell, St. Sunday Crag and the Fairfield hills all being within striking distance.

Ullswater is thought by many to be the most beautiful of all the lakes in the northern Lake District, being a serpentine body of water snaking a nine mile course under the lea of magnificent fells, woodland and mountain. Much of the lake, its shore and surrounding fells are accessible for visitors to explore, where you will find some of the finest walks and water activities, along with the amenities of the lakeside villages. One of the best walks in the National Park is the trail that runs along the eastern shores of Ullswater.

Explored from the southern end of the lake, dominated by Place Fell, St Sunday Cragg, and Fairfield, you take the path from Glenridding over to the east side of the water.

You will be able to ramble all day with a magnificent view always in your sight.

For the return journey, board the steamboat from Howtown back to Glenridding. For those who like getting up high, there are some of the best mountains and fells on your doorstep, the most famous being Helvellyn and the precipitous Striding Edge. A gentler walk is Aira Force, probably the most famous of the Lake District waterfalls.

The main force falls some 70ft below a stone footbridge - so don't forget your camera. Getting on the water is easy.

You can take a boat cruise on one of the five beautiful steamers in the Ullswater Steamer fleet.

They run the boats from Glenridding, with piers also at Pooley Bridge and Howtown.

It's a great way to see the lake from a different perspective and well worth taking a camera. Boat hire is readily available, both at Glenridding and Pooley Bridge, where you have a varied selection of craft on offer including kayaks, sailing boats and little motorboats, along with hire of fishing tackle and licenses. Further afield you have Keswick the main town of the north lakes, a bustling market town set between the peaks of Skiddaw and the gentle beauty of Derwentwater.

An all year round town there are good shops, a host of restaurants and cafes, along with museums, a theatre, cinema and leisure center.

At the lake you can take a boat trip or hire one for yourself and explore the shoreline and little bays.

For more information on Keswick and its attractions see our links.

The market towns of Penrith and Alston lie to the North West on the edge of the Eden Valley and are well worth a visit. Back south, leaving Patterdale, you take the Kirkstone Pass which winds its way through high fell and brings you down to Ambleside and the south lakes. All in all there is a much to see and do, both around the lake and nearby areas, towns and villages where to get the best from your visit it is well worth investing in a few good guides and maps.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

HARTSOP

The delightful hamlet of Hartsop lies in the Patterdale valley. It has retained its historic image with charming 17th-century grey stone cottages and working sheep farms. Hartsop is right in the heart of the Lake District and in the midst of some of the finest walking country that the area has to offer. It is a popular starting point for hill walkers climbing on the High Street range and the Helvellyn range. The village is overlooked by Brock Crags and Hartsop Dodd. It is a great centre for touring to all parts of the area and would provide a pleasant place to unwind. Ullswater Lake is less than 3 miles away giving you access to sailing, kayaking, and lake cruises. A mile from Hartsop is the small and remote lake of Hayeswater which serves as a reservoir for the town of Penrith.
