Location

The charming south Lake District village of Coniston nestles between the Coniston Old Man and Coniston Water. It is a popular destination for walkers, climbers and bikers. As well as those looking to slow down to the gentle rhythm of the idyllic valley.

So, whilst your loved-one, Rover, can enjoy the quiet village setting and flexibility of a self-catering home-from-home, including private gardens and on the doorstep walkies, there are plenty of treats for ‘mum’ and ‘dad’ too. There are cultural attractions like Brantwood, former home of famous Victorian art critic and philosopher John Ruskin with stunning views overlooking the eastern shore. Coniston’s literary and cultural heritage shines in The Ruskin Museum. Featuring exhibitions on prominent local icons including the largest display about John Ruskin himself. Plus Sir Donald Campbell, his Bluebird boat and his ill-fated world water speed record attempt in 1967. And Arthur Ransome, author of the famous children’s adventure series, Swallows and Amazons.

The gallery also looks at the history of a working Coniston. Including a great display on Coniston Coppermines, Herdwick farming and Ruskin Linen and Lace. Whilst dogs are not permitted inside the museum, there are several outside exhibitions, including a stone miniature village, sculptures by local blacksmith and artist, the engine from a crashed Second World War bomber plane and a fabulous dry stone wall.

The main walking route up Coniston Old Man ends in the village itself. Muddy boots and paws are expected in most of the pubs and cafes in the village. They welcome two-legged and four-legged walkers ready for a post walk refreshment. We recommend visiting Coniston Brewery’s The Black Bull, for a taste of the famous Bluebird Bitter.

Get tails wagging with a ½ mile walk from village centre to the serene waters of the lake. The wonderful bays offer plenty of opportunities to splash, refresh, paddle, picnic or sail.

Coniston Water

The main treat of a holiday in Coniston has to be this beautiful five-mile body of water. Enjoying the area by boat is a great way to stay car free. Join a cruise from Coniston Launch (dogs welcome), and head to Brantwood, where dogs on a lead can enjoy the café, gardens and estate. Set over 250 acres, this estate is perfect for walkers. There are many trails for differing abilities. From the easy paths of formal gardens and Ruskin’s favourite ‘Professors Garden’ to the more challenging hike of Crag Head. Head back to the café for lunch where pooches are welcome to refresh too. There are dog bowls on the restaurant terrace and outside the shop.

Adventure-seeker, Arthur Ransome, learnt to sail on Coniston. You can do the same, taking the whole family along as dogs are welcome at Coniston Boating Centre. The Bluebird Café here, with its outdoor seating, is also an excellent spot to wile away a warm afternoon enjoying the lake and mountain views.

If you fancy exploring Swallows and Amazons territory a bit more, a Coniston Launch tour takes you to places that inspired these exciting tales, including Wild Cat Island. Look out for where the location was used in the 2016 filming of Swallows and Amazons.

Or, join Billy, the rescue dog, in feeling the wind in your hair on board the National Trust owned Victorian Steam Gondola Yacht. The Weekend Walkers’ Cruise is popular with dogs and their owners, where you can enjoy a cruise the length of the lake followed by one of three walks.

One of these walks is the circular Monk Coniston to Tarn Hows trail. Follow the wide path around the tarn and through low lying woods and the Walled Garden of Beatrix Potter owned Monk Coniston estate. This is perfect for less active dogs and owners keen to visit one of the most scenic parts of the Lake District. The Ship Inn is a handy dog friendly pub for this walk!
